Disc 1 – SYSTEMS (± 03:21:00 hours)
This DVD explains in general all the important aircraft systems.
Which aircraft systems? Here you are:
- Intro (00:01:43 – hh:mm:ss),
- Glass Cockpit (00:03:39),
- Mode control Panel or MCP (00:19:07),
- PFD (00:14:57), ND (00:05:09) and the FMS (01:18:26),

- Landing Gear and Brakes (00:08:46).

Disc 2 – PROCEDURE (± 01:52:00 hours)
As the name suggests, this DVD deals with all kind of possible procedures. Those procedures/flight profiles are:
- Normal Takeoff (00:05:00 – hh:mm:ss),
- Low Speed Abort (00:02:53),
- High Speed Abort (00:03:26),
- Emergency Takeoff (00:11:06),
- CDAP or also knows as Constant Descent Approach Procedure (00:05:29),
- VOR-(00:22:18), Localizer-(00:18:13), Visual-(00:12:08), Handflown ILS- (00:11:14) and CATIII Autoland approaches (00:12:20),
- Go Around Procedure (00:07:36).

Disc 3 – FLIGHT (± 02:15:00 hours)
Probably this is the most interesting and exiting DVD of the whole package since it offers a complete flight including all the preparations and background information of a North Atlantic flight from KFSO (San Francisco International – United States of America) to EDDF (Frankfurt Main - Germany). Remember and several times mentioned before, the first two DVD's are still needed to get the complete overview, ranging from system description till and including the different take off’s and approaches. It’s now time to get a closer look to the contents of this North Atlantic flight profile. It’s split into the following sub-chapters:
- Preflight,
- Captain on the Flightdeck!,
- Initialization and Preflight Preparation,
- Before Start, Pushback and Startup,
- Taxi,
- Takeoff, Climb and finally Cruise,
- Night Lighting,
- Center Pumps,
- North Atlantic Tracks,
- Tank to Engine Switch,
- Crossing the Atlantic,
- Descent Planning followed by Descent,
- Approach and Landing,
- Taxi-In, Shutdown and finally Secure.

The EICAS (Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System) is discussed in detail whenever a sub system is explained. Let’s have a look to some screenshots of this DVD and remember, these are just screenshots and should give you an idea of what can be expected. And although it’s nice to see, the videos are much more impressive since it really allows you to be a part of the 747 Training. Ok, here we go:

Although these screenshots should give you an idea of the discussed systems, remember, screenshots never represent the real video! Depending on your 747 knowledge, it still offers lots of additional information but keep in mind that you still need to read the PMDG books to my opinion.
The SYSTEMS DVD gives you more the 3 hours of detailed system information and then specifically for the MCP, EFIS instruments and the FMS.
All together it should give you a very good basis for the other Angle of Attack DVD's

What I wrote before, and I really want to make it as clear as possible although most aircraft systems are covered on this DVD, there’s still a need to read the official PMDG manuals. Although DVD 1 is a good learning DVD with lots of information, some systems overviews – read schematics - are not discussed, so therefore the PMDG manuals will help you with further details.

You’ve got your thoughts about the depth of the lessons? Let’s give you an example; the FMS part takes around 1 hour 8 minutes or the MCP takes almost 20 minutes! By the way, the times can be found behind each individual or combined chapter(s). Although an almost 6 minute oral explanation of the Fire Protection system doesn’t seem too long, believe me, in 6 minutes you can show and explain a lot about it. And when it’s going too quick, no problem. You simple stop the video or rewind it and start all over again. Hey, wouldn't it be nice if you could do that with a real instructor!

The previous pictures were randomly chosen all over DVD 1, so let’s make six other shots from only one system. Since I said something about the Fire Protection, let’s take this as an example.

These screenshots taken from the AoA Fire Protection module. Comparing these AoA shots with the contents of the official PMDG manual, it offers a lot of aural and visual information in a more friendly and didactical way then sitting and reading page by page by page by ……….

Disc 2 – PROCEDURE (± 01:52:00 hours)
As the name suggests, this DVD deals with all kind of possible procedures. Those procedures/flight profiles are:
- Normal Takeoff (00:05:00 – hh:mm:ss),
- Low Speed Abort (00:02:53),
- High Speed Abort (00:03:26),
- Emergency Takeoff (00:11:06),
- CDAP or also knows as Constant Descent Approach Procedure (00:05:29),
- VOR-(00:22:18), Localizer-(00:18:13), Visual-(00:12:08), Handflown ILS- (00:11:14) and CATIII Autoland approaches (00:12:20),
- Go Around Procedure (00:07:36).

Together with the video examples, you’re able to print out the necessary charts, which are accessible via the earlier discussed setup.exe installer. One other thing which needs some attention is that whenever the approach is discussed, there’s not a good link or guide telling the user/reader/student which Acrobat file is needed. A quick look at finding the correct approach chart will probably be no problem for an expert user, but what about a less experienced flight simmer? Here we miss the correct reference as to which chart is needed to follow the specific approach. I know, you see the charts flying over the screen (see the LH lower screenshot below) but it is better when the specific Acrobat file was identified, in my opinion.

Ok, let’s have a look at the following screenshots which were also randomly taken from DVD 2.

Still shots like these never represent the real video procedures, but it should give you an idea that any aspect of a procedure is discussed while these shots only offer you a tiny detail. Basic Boeing 747 knowledge is necessary as well as the possible procedures which can be expected while flying the 747. Therefore this DVD offers the most important critical procedures needed to master the aircraft. I’m talking about the takeoff- and approach phases. Adding this DVD contents to the previous SYSTEMS collection, makes you ready for the North Atlantic flight to Frankfurt.

My overall impression is that it offers the different and important parts of the possible take offs and the many approaches. Visualizing all the possible approaches is much more effective than reading a book, in my opinion. Let’s put it is this way …. Seeing is learning and doing right away!

Remember this; when listening and following the DVD on your second TFT, a notebook or whatever you have, and at the same time trying to reproduce this with your PMDG 747 in FS9/FSX, it's really a challenge. You can either stop the DVD or you can pause the simulator. Ok, it’s not that challenging when stopping the sim with “P”, but you’re in a learning curve and everything is possible.

How you do it? That’s up to each individual and who am I to say what’s the best way. Most important is the balanced relationship between the necessary charts when looking to the different approaches and the didactical instruction. Sometimes it’s going a little too quick but you can always rewind to start it again.

Let’s give you one other example when mastering the handflown ILS, for example. So here we go …… jump into the right hand seat, relax while Captain Chris is performing the handflown ILS approach.

Glide Slope signal > 2 dots

Selection of GEAR down and FLAPS 20

EICAS GEAR moving and FLAPS 20 magenta selected

AP disconnect command Picking up LOC signal DH coming, so watch out of the windows for the runway
Yep, runway in sight at RH (radio height) 360 feet At 50 feet disconnection of AT Manually FLARE – you’re in control – the aircraft
So you’re flying – a handflown ILS approach - or to be honest, Chris is flying is with the help of the FD (Flight Director) needles. Although it’s a damd good movie, keep awake since lots of things you need to know and to remember are passing the show.
